We’re in the quarter finals in the Australian Open 2012. Below are some small previews of the most interesting matches of Day 10.
Men’s Quarterfinals
Novak Djokovic(SRB)[1] vs. David Ferrer(ESP)[5]
Rod Laver Arena 7:30pm Start 1st Match
Through the previous meetings of these quarterfinalist there is a clear pattern of clay dominance for the Spaniard and hard-court dominance for the Serb. They are both two of the best returners in the ATP and should threaten each other’s serves repeatedly. The prospect of losing serve does not intimidate Djokovic, who converted more break points than anyone on the Tour last year. On the other hand, despite improvements over the last few months, Ferrer’s serve remains the weakest element of his game and a key target for the world #1 to attack. Ferrers fitness has improved a lot this year though and Djokovic should aim to finish the match early and avoid long rallies if he wants to be 100% fit for the challenges he would face should he progress to the semis and final.
Andy Murray(GBR)[4] vs. Kei Nishikori(JPN)[24]
Rod Laver Arena 11:00am Start 3rd Match
Two counterpunchers are up against this quarterfinal. Murray can expect to win many more free points with his serve than can Nishikori as he seems to be dealing with pressure in those difficult service games much better. The Japanese man has developed a game with very few flaws but not many weapons. Nevertheless he is a great talent as his victory over Djokovic in Basel last fall demonstrated. Murray, who received a retirement in the previous round, should bring greater energy to the match and should he play his finest tennis as he has so far, he should have no problems moving on to the semi-finals.
Women’s Quarterfinals
Ekatelina Makarova(RUS) vs. Maria Sharapova(RUS)[4]
Rod Laver Arena 11:00am Start 2nd Match
Sharapova reached her first quarterfinal at a hard-court major since 2008, withstanding Lisicki’s percussive serve and maintaining her bulletproof resilience in three-setters. Makarova has not lost a set since the first round and has frustrated her seeded victims with explosive down-the-line shots that showcase her ability to redirect the ball from behind the baseline. The pace of these courts suit her game especially well, and few would dispute that her ranking of #56 does not accurately reflect her abilities.
Sara Errani(ITA) vs. Petra Kvitova(CZE)[2]
Rod Laver Arena 11:00am Start 1st Match
A thoroughly unexpected presence in a major quarterfinal, Errani defeated only one seeded player in four matches. But she is now facing the world #2 and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and it will be her biggest challange yet for sure. Kvitova has established comfortable leads in all four of her matches, conceding no more than two games in any of her first sets. Nevertheless this is a major quarterfinal and one cannot afford to take an opponent too lightly.
