Fourth seed and 2008 champion Andy Murray narrowly avoided an early exit at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Thursday when he battled past 21-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in two hours and 34 minutes.
